To avoid bloody chaos, all that is needed is for the most respected reformers and dissidents to call together for a peaceful transition allowing for the formation of a political spectrum and the organisation of free elections. This is the most dangerous illusion of all. In the United States, in Europe and everywhere else, it is easy to believe that Donald Trump has piled up so many failures that all we have to do is wait until November 2026 and the mid-term elections to wake up from this nightmare.
